Alternate, simple, elliptic-ovate to ovate-oblong purply bronze leaves, rounded at the base, and white flowers.
It is an excellent landscape plant, which offers interest throughout the seasons.
The sweet, edible, purple black fruits were eaten by the North American Indians, and are still beloved by birds and other animals. A serviceberry pie is the equal of a blueberry one.

A cultivar noteworthy for its bright cherry red stem in winter. Medium to dark green, opposite, simple, ovate leaves turning purplish to reddish in fall. Stems are green in the warm months. Small white flowers sporadically throughout summer.
This form was orignally released by the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. In a winter setting, with snow to set it off, the red stem is handsome and eye appealing. It is also excellent for massing in hedges or borders.

Simple, opposite lance-ovate or lanceolate leaves, of flat medium green, turning yellow-green in fall. Greenish purple, five-petalled flowers in summer.
The plant is noteworthy mostly for the warty, scarlet capusles which appear in fall, and burst open to display equally scarlet seeds. This is the origin of one of its common names, Hearts-a-Burstin.

An improvement having larger and more numerous sterile florets, giving a more dense, solid appearance. Dark green leaves turning a deep red-bronze in fall. White florets turn pink as they mature.

Native
A compact, deciduous, rounded shrub with an erect habit that typically grows 1-4' tall. Profuse 5-petaled, bright yellow flowers (to 1" diameter) with numerous, yellow stamens in early to mid summer. Stamens are bushy to the point of partially obscuring the petals (hence the species name of prolificum which refers to the stamens). Very showy in bloom. Dark green, lance-shaped leaves are 2-3" long. Bark of older stems exfoliates to reveal attractive, pale orange inner bark.
. . . . Plants of the genus Hypericum (some species have been used since ancient times in the treatment of wounds and inflammations) were apparently gathered and burned to ward off evil spirits on the eve of St. John's Day, thus giving rise to the genus common name of St. John's wort.
