Erect, somewhat stiff, sword-shaped, iris-like foliage and showy, freckled orange blooms, to 2 inches across.
After blooming, the plants will develop fruit capsules which split to expose shiny black seeds; these are attractive in dried arrangements.
Called She Gan, it is used in traditional Chinese medicine, and primarily anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, it is valued in southern China as a treatment for a fungal infection common among paddyfield workers.

This semi evergreen sedge is a wonderful native groundcover for average to dry, deciduous shade Delicate, arching leaves. Slow, spreading clump former. Fine textured appearance.
C. pensylvanica is native to open woods and thickets from the eastern seaboard west to North Dakota and Missouri and from southern Ontario and Quebec south to Tennessee and Virginia.

Broad, crinkled, ribbon-like blades grow in clumps. As sturdy as it is beautiful, this clumping grass is an excellent groundcover for shady areas, or on shaded slopes, where its tenacious roots hold back sliding dirt, as well as any daylily. In spring, it sends up modest but interesting flower stalks, which soon go to seed. Prefers moist soils.

Terminal clusters of showy white flowers with a blush of rose. Late August into September. Flowers somewhat resemble turtles' heads. Dark green foliage. Clump forming.
Two valuable landscape features are flowering well in shade and the very late bloom time. The native habitat of White Turtlehead is usually very wet, but it will do fine in average garden soil.
Used by Indians and herbalists for liver diseases, sores and as a laxative.

Bears golden-yellow flowers from April to October with a peak bloom in May. Evergreen. Very useful in foundation plantings, rock gardens, banks, or as a general ground cover. Moderate growth rate. Space 12 to 18 in.
Green and Gold makes a striking show during the long peak bloom period in the spring and is a good, dense, medium-green ground cover with some bonus flowers for the balance of the year. Blooming after the spring peak is somewhat sporadic.

Attractive dark green foliage. Graceful spires of white flowers can tower more than 6 feet above the foliage. Excellent shade plant for both foliage and flower.
C. racemosa is underused in the shade landscape. Dig out some Hostas and give some Black Cohosh a place. It is slow growing, is not invasive and is long-lived.
The historical medicinal uses are far to numerous to list in this catalog. One early reference devoted 48 pages to it.

Dark green erect leaves. Arches of fragrant, white, bell-shaped flowers in spring. Spreads with rhizomes at a moderate rate. Space 8 to 12 in. apart. Native variety.
Convalaria majalis is a wide ranging species found in Asia, Europe and N. America with some authorities considering the variety montana native to the Appalachian Mountains. It differs in its slightly larger size and growth habit. Individual plants in a colony are more widely spaced than the European types.
The root contains a digitalis-like drug. Toxic.

The paired, opposite leaves of C. major are so deeply divided, they appear to be in whorls of six. It is stoloniferous, but not invasive. The solitary stems grow straight and tall.

A densely bushy plant with erect, branching stems, and linear, dissected leaves, this selection is similar to "Moonbeam", but has deeper, golden yellow daisylike flowers.
