Simple, opposite lance-ovate or lanceolate leaves, of flat medium green, turning yellow-green in fall. Greenish purple, five-petalled flowers in summer.
The plant is noteworthy mostly for the warty, scarlet capusles which appear in fall, and burst open to display equally scarlet seeds. This is the origin of one of its common names, Hearts-a-Burstin.
